7.2 How Can I Make New Substances from Old Substances?

This module is a project-based module that builds on core science concepts such as the particle nature of matter, and substances and their properties, with emphasis on students designing investigations and figuring out and explaining phenomena. Students investigate what it means to make new substances (products) from old substances (reactants) via chemical reactions. Students make soap from fat, make a bioplastic from cornstarch, and engage in several investigations that include molecular modeling experiences that support them in developing a deeper, molecular understanding of phase changes, mixtures, and chemical reactions. The core science concepts explored in the module—especially those related to matter and its interactions and to energy—are instrumental in modules that follow, and for future science learning.
